ARMOURED VEH ROYAL ENGINEERS INTRAMURAL (TURRET RING CUT)
Chieftain AVRE — Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers Intramural (Turret Ring Cut). Contract KL/A/0217 (ROF Leeds built), entered service 1 July 1968. The Intramural designation with turret ring cut indicates the hull was modified for internal/training use with the turret ring physically cut, rendering it unable to mount a turret. Merlin records service with 23 ENGR REGT (AIR ASSAULT) and 73 FD SQN 23 ENGR REGT from March-May 1987, ABRO Bovington planned repair May 1987 (not received back until December 1991 — over four years), QMT Bovington Armour Centre May 1992, QM(T) Dept Armour Centre November 1993, Vehicle Depot Ludgershall October 1995, then DERA CHERTSEY November 1995 (RCP 999L28, received March 1997 — 18 months at DERA suggesting trials or research use). No cast flag set. After leaving DERA Chertsey the vehicle likely passed to private/commercial ownership; a Facebook comment on the confirmation photograph suggests a possible connection to Turbo Venture, a well-known UK military vehicle hire and film/TV support company based in southern England. Registration plate 04EB67 confirmed by photograph. Hull confirmed at a UK yard or collection facility, photographed 17 March 2025 by Jeffrey Carroll.
