Notes

Chieftain AVRE Intramural (Turret Ring Cut), described as the original AVRE conversion. Contract KL/A/0217. In service April 1967. Photographed at Bovington July 1997, described by tankmuseum.com as the original AVRE conversion. Last Merlin movement HQ RE June 1998. Tank Encyclopedia confirms one of the earlier Willich AVREs is displayed outside the Tank Museum Bovington as a permanent exhibit. Given the Bovington sighting, the original AVRE conversion description, and the HQ RE last movement, this is the most likely candidate for the vehicle displayed externally at Bovington. Confirmed survivor.

Data source: Service history and last known location are sourced from the British Army Merlin Archive, the official vehicle inventory system covering records up to 2012 when the archive was declassified. Survival status has been assessed from the last recorded unit — vehicles may have changed hands, been restored, or been scrapped since then. The last Merlin record for this vehicle is from 01 Jul 1998 — information about its current status is particularly welcome.
