Chieftain Mk2, originally built by Vickers Armstrong Engineers Ltd, Elswick, Newcastle. Entered service 22 January 1967. Not in Merlin — Mk2 variants predate the registration system. Served with 2 RTR (2nd Royal Tank Regiment), Caen Barracks, Hohne from April 1970; Queen's Own Hussars, Caen Barracks, Hohne from July 1970. Probable base overhaul to Mk2XY standard at 23 Base Workshop REME, Wetter, 1973/74. The Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales's Own), Athlone Barracks, Sennelager from April 1974. Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, Athlone Barracks, Sennelager 1978-1982. Probable base overhaul to IFCS (Mk9) standard at 23 Base Workshop, Wetter, 1982/83. 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, Imphal Barracks, Osnabrück 1983-1984. 4 RTR (4th Royal Tank Regiment), Imphal Barracks, Osnabrück 1984-1987. FVRDE Chertsey (Fighting Vehicle Research and Development Establishment) 1987-2000, used as a test bed for stealth technology research and other classified projects.
